In this article, I’m going to provide you with a quick trout fishing guide, in the hopes that these tips and techniques will help you to become a more successful angler. Trout fishing season is getting ready to begin in most part of the country, and these simple tips and techniques will help anyone catch more trout. Every tip contained in this trout fishing guide has been proven through more that fifty years of combined trout fishing experience.

The first thing that I want to cover in this trout fishing guide is your hands. Although this may sound strange, your hands are a very important factor in trout fishing. You see, trout have a very sensitive sense of smell and if there are any unnatural odors (such as smoke or gasoline for example) on your hands, these scents will transfer to your bait or lure. If trout detect any unnatural odors, they will tend not to bite (especially with larger and more experienced fish). The easy remedy for this problem is to rub some grass or dirt into your hands before baiting up. This eliminates any unnatural odors that might be on your hands.

The next thing to keep in mind is the size of your gear. When trout fishing, very light gear should be employed. As a matter of fact, I personally prefer ultra light gear. When I refer to the word “gear”, I’m referring specifically to your rod, reel, and fishing line. For trout fishing ultra light rods and reels, spooled with fishing line no heavier than six-pound test is a must. I personally use (and suggest) four-pound test line or lighter, but six-pound test is the heaviest that should be employed for trout fishing.

When fishing for trout it’s also very important that your bait is presented in a natural manner. This means using something called gang hooks. Gang hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem that enable live bait (and especially live worms) to be presented in a completely natural manner. Natural presentation makes a huge difference in trout fishing. This is why every trout angler that uses bait should always have pre-tied gang hooks available to be used.

The next thing to make sure of is that you’re on the water art the proper times. What do I mean by this? I simply mean that there are certain times during the days and months that are better for fishing that other times. These “better fishing times” are directly correlated to the weather and moon. Knowing about the weather and moon, and how these two forces of Mother Nature impact fishing is a key to trout fishing success. Pay attention to the weather and moon, and use this information to make sure that you’re on the water art the proper times, and you’ll catch more trout, it’s as simple as that.

No trout fishing guide would be complete without mentioning that there is no substitute for spending time on the water. The more time you can spend on the water, fishing for trout, the better. There is simply no substitute for practicing your craft. This is good for people like me, because there is no place I would rather be than standing in a flowing river, trying to catch a trout or three. I assume you feel the same way.

Trevor Kugler is co-founder of JRWfishing.com and an avid angler. He has more than 20 years experience fishing for all types of fish, and 15 years of business and internet experience. He currently raises his three year old daughter in the heart of trout fishing country…..Montana!

Fly fishing is a sport that has been around for hundreds of years but nobody really knew about it until the last couple of centuries when it gained popularity in Britain and in the United States. For some, fly fishing is just “that thing where they fling a big long fishing line over their heads and try not to catch themselves on it.” For others fly fishing is “the subject of a movie that had Brad Pitt in it” you know the one, from a long time ago?? For the fly fishing enthusiast though, fly fishing is a sport and the best way to educate others on fly fishing is with a fly fishing guide.

This article aims to be a very basic fly fishing guide and will take you through some of the history of fly fishing as well as a basic overview of how to fly fish.

The earliest writings of fly fishing that have been found so far are dated around the second century AD. After that there is a gap of roughly thirteen hundred years as the next fly fishing writings that we know about were published in the late 1400s. After those writings were published, the sport lost notoriety until the nineteenth century when the British elite fell in love with the sport. In the late 1800s, fly fishing became very popular in Britain and it quickly became the sport of choice among the British upper class and well-to-do society members. It wasn?t long before very elite fly fishing clubs were formed. These clubs were small and honored the traditional methods of fly fishing. They were appalled by the American practices of fly fishing which involved all members of society no matter what their social ranking and also involved the attempt to improve upon the traditional methods of the sport. The American fly fishers are famous for constructing new rods, new line and new reels.

The best way to learn how to fly fish is to find yourself a good fly fishing guide as this is a sport that is not easily learned from books. It is better to go out to the water with your fly fishing guide and have him or her teach you the basics of casting, reeling and landing your fish.

Basically to fly fish you have to know how to cast. If you don’t know how to cast, you will need to find a fly fishing guide who can show you how because you just can’t learn how to cast from the written word. There are two types of casts you will want your fly fishing guide to teach you: the “C” cast and the “J” cast.

In the event that you can’t find a good fly fishing guide, there are lots of fishing courses available that you can take. A quick search through the internet will locate a fly fishing class in your local area. Once you learn how to fly fish, you can be a fly fishing guide for others. The sport is incredibly popular and growing by the day.

There are many anglers out there who are just getting started fishing for trout, and in this article I’m going to reveal some fishing tips that will help the novice be more successful. At first glance, catching trout can seem a bit daunting, especially if you pay attention to the hard core flea flickers. When most anglers think of trout fishing , they automatically think of fly fishing (or flea flicking as my mentor described it). This however, is not the case. For example, I’ve been an avid fisherman for over 20 years and I do not flick flea’s.

So, if you’re interested in fly fishing tips, this article will be of no help to you. The tips in this article are for spin fishermen. And the first of these tips concerns the type of gear that is employed. When I refer to the word “gear” I’m referring specifically to the size rod, reel, and fishing line that used in your trout fishing endeavors.

When it comes to fishing for trout, I personally use no gear larger than light action. As a matter of fact for 99% of my fishing I use ultra light gear. Yes, ultra light gear is very light and small, but once you get used to using ultra light gear, it’s difficult to use anything else. My ultra light reel is always spooled with four pound test monofilament, but if you wanted to upgrade to six-pound test you could. As a matter of fact, for the novice (which is what this article is about) I would probably saddest six-pound test to get you started, and get the “feel” for the light gear.

You see these fish have very sensitive eyesight and can see your line under the water if it’s too heavy. And if the trout detect your fishing line they are much less apt to bite, which I’m sure you can imagine. So make sure that you’re always using ultra light rods and reels and as light fishing line as you feel comfortable with (no heavier than 6-pound test).

The next fishing tip is to always use gang hooks when using live bait (especially live worms). Gang hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem that allow you to present live bait (and especially live worms) in a completely natural manner. This makes a very big difference when fishing for trout. Especially the larger more experienced trout. [http://www.jrwfishing.com/gang_hooks.asp]Having pre-tied gang hooks ready to use when trout fishing is a great advantage. They allow your bait to be presented in the most natural and effective manner possible.

Finally, remember to be as efficient as you can when fishing. Being efficient simply means that you will be able to spend more time with your line in the water (where the trout are), rather than out of the water while you bait up, search for gear, and/or re-tie. Having items like [http://www.jrwfishing.com/bait_pouch.asp]a bait bag, retractors, and rod rulers will help you be as efficient as possible when fishing. For the experienced, as well as novice angler, being efficient is a key to success of failure.

Trevor Kugler is co-founder of JRWfishing and an avid angler. He has more than 20 years experience fishing for all types of fish, and 15 years of business and internet experience. He currently raises his three year old daughter in the heart of trout fishing country…..Montana!

Fly fishing is a great hobby and has lots of benefits outside the actual catching of a fish. In our stress filled lives what better way to relax than to get out in nature and breathe the fresh air and soak up the beauty of the great outdoors? The sound of a running stream alone has a wonderful calming effect and the stress relieving benefits of fly fishing is a great bonus to a challenging and fun hobby.

If you’re considering taking up fly fishing you will need the proper equipment and also learn how to use it. The main pieces of equipment you’ll require to start on your journey to becoming a fly fishing guru are:

Fishing Flies

The artificial fly lures that you use can vary greatly and depend on the species of fish you intend to catch and what insects are most common in the stream. In some cases you will use a fly for working the surface of the water and other times a lure that sinks a little. Once you become more involved in fly fishing it is not too difficult to learn how to make you own fly lures. Catching a nice sized fish using a lure that you have made with your own hands is an extremely rewarding experience too.

Fly Fishing Line

The line used for fly fishing is much thicker than normal fishing line as it needs to have enough weight to achieve the whipping action used to move the fly around the surface of the stream.

Fly Fishing Rod

A proper fly fishing rod weighs somewhere around 5 ounces and is usually about 9 feet in length, although this will depend on how small or large the river is where you intend to use it. Local fishing tackle stores are a great source of free advice on which equipment to use in a particular stream.

Once you have the right fly fishing gear you then need to learn how to use it. The idea behind the fly fishing technique is to mimic the behavior of the insects the fish are feeding on. Here is where observing the river is important so you can select a fly lure that looks similar to insects flying around the edges of the stream. You will also need to use an action with the rod that makes to fly mimic what the insects are doing on or below the surface of the water.

As important as knowing how to use the fly fishing equipment and choosing a lure is selecting the best time to fish. This can depend on when the fish are most active which may be different from one stream to the next, however dawn and dusk are usually the best times as the sun isn’t bright enough for the fish to see you and the insects that the fish feed on are usually very active.

With a little preparation and learning about the right equipment and how to use it fly fishing can be an exciting and rewarding hobby. Its great appeal is not only the relaxation element of getting out in nature but the excitement of catching a nice fish.

Once you land a good sized fish that fights on the end of your line then you’ll be hooked on fly fishing for life.

Fly Fishing Tips Setting the Hook

The sport of fly fishing consists of many specialized skills that come together in a delicate balance of rhythm and precision. Setting the hook is one of those specialized skills. Many times the fly fishing techniques for setting the hook are neglected by fly fishermen who spend many hours practicing and reading about casting and fly tying skills. Unlike many of the skills of fly fishing, it is almost impossible to practice setting the hook without a live fish on the end of your fly line.

The first step in a successful hook actually begins when you tie your fly, either at home or on the river bank. It is very important to make sure that your hooks are razor-sharp. A dull hook doesn’t have a good chance of finding its mark in the mouth of the trout.

In most fly fishing techniques it is important to set the hook as quickly as possible. If the water is fast, the trout usually strikes the fly very quickly and with a lot of force. It won’t take long for the trout to realize that he has an artificial fly in his mouth, and he can, and will spit it out in a split second.

Fly fishing in slow moving water is the one exception to setting the hook as quickly as possible. When the water is slow trout feed in a more leisurely fashion. They may require a second or two in order to take the fly. If you set the hook too soon, you’ll most likely pull the fly away from the trout. However, if you set the hook too late the trout may have already spit it out. There again is the delicate balance so often seen in fly fishing.

Sometimes while fly fishing the fishermen becomes so excited when he hooks a trout that he sets the hook with too much force. This usually results in broken tippits. Setting the hook quickly, doesn’t mean pulling on it with great force. One way to avoid broken tippits is to use a slip strike which cushions the tippit.

If you are fly fishing using an upstream presentation, strip in the line with your line hand at the moment that you set the hook. This will remove most of the slack in the line and improve your chances for a good hook set.

When setting the hook using surface techniques of fly fishing, it is very important that you are able to see your fly in order to get a good hook set. If you are fly fishing using an underwater technique, it is essential that you can see your indicator when setting the hook. In both instances timing is very important.

Many experienced fly fishermen spend a lot of time imagining the strike and thinking about how they will move when they set the hook. They do this because they know that in fly fishing, the more imaginary trout you hook and land in your mind, the better your chances of taking an actual fish.

Fly Fishing Tips Largemouth Bass

For fly fishing for largemouth bass can provide some of the most exciting fishing in the country. The largemouth bass is probably the most popular game fish in America. The popularity of fishing for bass is partly because no other freshwater fish has a wider distribution. Largemouth bass can be found from southern Canada to South America. Smallmouth bass and popping for bluegills are also excellent for fly fishing, but they prefer slightly cooler waters and are not as ever present as the largemouth variety.

Generally, the warmer the water, the larger the bass will grow. For example, a four or five pound bass may be large for a northern lake, but warmer southern waters regularly produce 10 pounders and better. The temperature of the water is a key factor not only in fly fishing, but in all fishing. When fishing for bass it is an especially important factor.

The best fishing will take place just after the bass have spawned, which is going to vary according to the temperatures. For largemouth bass spawning takes place when the water temperatures reached the low to mid-60s. In Minnesota for example, a female bass may not deposit her eggs until mid-June, while in Florida the female bass may spawn as early as February.

The behavior of the largemouth bass is also influenced considerably by the top temperature of the water. On hot summer days, they usually feed during the early morning hours and then again during the last few hours of daylight, when the sun isn’t as bright and the water temperature is cooler. Bass are generally found in areas of the water that have a lot of vegetation and cover. They spend a lot of time near the water’s edge among the grasses, reeds, and other plants.

Many fly fishermen fishing for largemouth bass use bass bugs and poppers. Poppers were designed as a surface lure to be skipped across the top of the water in a series of quick retrieves. Other good fly patterns for largemouth bass or the Muddler Minnow and the Wooly Worm. There are some fly fishermen that prefer to use streamers and bucktail.

When fly fishing for bass the fly is worked differently than it is for trout. Poppers are worked not only for their appearance but also for their sound. Generally, when a fly is cast for bass it should be allowed to remain unmoving for a longer period of time then for trout. It is estimated that 60% of bass strikes are made on a still fly. Bass tend to inspect your fly for some time before making the decision whether to take it or not. It is important to remember while fly fishing, that the warmer the water, the longer it will take the bass to take a fly.

At times fly fishermen like to tease the bass with repeated casts over the area where they think he’s holding. Teasing can sometimes be a very effective method in bringing a lazy fish up for a strike when nothing else seems to work

Fly fishing for largemouth bass can be a wonderful, exciting experience.
